[ REYNARD ]

Lords, you have heard many tales,
That many tellers have told to you.
How Paris took Helen,
The evil and the pain he felt
Of Tristan that la Chevre
Wrote rather beautifully about;
And fabliaux and epics;
Of the Romance of Yvain and his beast
And many others told in this land
But never have you heard about the war
That was difficult and lengthy
Between Renart and Ysengrin

physical appearance
Thiefing, conning, tricking, committing every crime...

PB is Garrett Hedlund, he of the many great expressions. Character and writer are both over 18.

Reynard has deep blue eyes, hair that is as wild as he is and his smile is in the dictionary next to:
mischievous [ˈmɪstʃɪvəs]
adj
1. inclined to acts of mischief
2. teasing; slightly malicious a mischievous grin
3. causing or intended to cause harm a mischievous plot

His body is defined, but lean, he's ruggedly handsome and definitely cute, when he wants to be. That really is the keyword here. Reynard is an excellent actor, capable of expressing just about any emotion with utter conviction. He's very versatile in how he presents himself, depending on what his intentions are and he's capable of using his whole body for that.

The most remarkable thing is that, really, even if you know how he is, when he puts it all into it it's still so very hard not just to trust those eyes. How could they lie?

He generally dresses according to the fashion of the times, but always just a bit on the casual side. His clothes quite often have rips in them and he doesn't really care. He's not above dressing up for a scheme though!

Usually he wears a knife somewhere on his person, often openly in a sheath on his thigh, sometimes less visible. But even without a weapon, he still has nails that are harder and sharper than normal ones, close to claws, just as his teeth are pointy and dangerous, telling of his predatory side.

His Other Form: Reynard's other appearance is a red fox, who looks like, well, a red fox. Perhaps there's something just a bit more to that fox's face, but basically he's just a fox. A handsome one, though!

personality & demeanor
Plotting, lying, cheating, laughing all the time...
_______________________________

Reynard, often introducing himself as Reineke or whatever else catches his fancy or fits his purposes at the moment, is a trickster.

That really says it all. He pranks, manipulates and uses others for no ultimate purpose, merely for kicks and giggles or occassionally perhaps to save his own hide when things threaten to close in on him.

He isn't above being nice occassionally, not even above acting selfless, but that would be completely unpredictable. It is impossible to trust him, he lies out of habit, conviction and often with an ulterior motive.

Besides that he has a keen intellect, is wondrously eloquent, considers himselt extremely witty and while he isn't particularly strong, he is very fast and quite skilled in a number of things that come in handy when you're in his profession, mainly thiefing, hiding, running...

As an excellent actor he can fake just about everything, to the point where he might get a bit too tangled up in his own games if he actually starts believing he might care for someone.

Though he prefers not to fight, he can. He is a predator after all and he can hunt and he can fight, he can hurt and he can kill. It's not really his modus operandi as a general rule, but when he's out of options or it just strikes him as a good way to go, he does. However, he is a very dirty fighter, which makes it possible for him to defeat opponents that are actually superior.

What manner of creature is he?

A Fox, obviously. Well, not really. He can take the shape of a fox, but just as easily can he appear as human. His teeth might be that bit too sharp and his grin that smidgen to wide, but still, when he is human, he is human.

He doesn't have any magical talent, powers or whatever else. He is, however, very charismatic and extremely good at reading people, while being almost impossible to read himself. That is to say that even though he doesn't have any power in that area, he might at times be unnaturally good at guessing what's going on inside people or predicting what will happen.

However, despite not really having any supernatural powers, he isn't just any normal mortal guy (who can turn into a fox). Reynard doesn't age, for one thing. He's also pretty damn hard to kill, as he heals relatively fast and even excessive amount of damage. Not to the point where you could just watch him heal, but give him a few days and he'll be good as new.

He can be hurt, can even be killed, but he will always heal, will always return, even if it takes a while.

personal history
Yet Reynard still lives on.
_______________________________

Reynard has been around for a few millennia, give or take. He's very much a creature living in the now, though, and he doesn't really keep tabs of time. Why would he need to, seeing as he doesn't age? He is not immortal, he can be killed, but he comes back. He doesn't know where he goes in between, he doesn't know how it works and it's just frightening enough for him to really not want to die unless it absolutely can't be avoided, but that's his thing.

So what can there be said about his life? All the stories you ever heard - they're most likely true and then some. There is Isengrim, his old antagonist, who he outwitted most of the time, but who occasionally got the better of him, too. His feelings for him verge on obsession and are very much a mix between love and hate, just that they both usually result in the same thing: Let's see how we can make life suck for him a lot.

Another important person in his life is his wife, Hermeline. He references her semi-frequently, but how much she actually means to him is a mystery, probably even to himself. She is his, that much is clear, there exists a story where she remarried after he was thought dead and he didn't like that at all. Really.

Whatever his relationship to his wife might be like, it definitely doesn't stop him from sleeping around. Not in the least.

Reynard the Fox
Original character inspired by fables.

OOC permissions
Backtagging: Definitely, not as if I'm the fastest out there.
Threadhopping: Bring it on! If there's any reason you're not sure, just ask.
Offensive subjects: Nothing I can really think of, Reynard can also be quite offensive himself.

IC information
Species: Fae
Role/Faction: Outcast, Level 1 in the Hillingdon Clan
Strength: 1
Magic: 2
Friends/Allies: None within London, as of yet.
Enemies: Plenty, but currently none in London. (That he knows of.) Yet.
Relationship status: Technically married, but he's been estranged from his wife literally for centuries. And it's not as if he was ever that faithful to her. Right now there are no significant romantic relationships however.
Notable physical characteristics: Sometimes he looks like a fox. That is notable. When not a fox, he looks roughly in his twenties, sometimes even younger, especially when freshly shaved. His hair is in a constant state of disarray. He has a tendency to smile that bit too wide and his teeth, especially the canines, are sharper than they should be. He also tends towards certain mannerisms that make more sense when knowing how often he literally is a fox, from relying on his sense of smell to shaking himself off when wet and licking people he likes a lot more than anyone generally cares for.
Notable magical characteristics: He can turn into a fox. That's about it these days, although he used to be more powerful back in the day. He can probably be detected as fae by anyone sensitive enough though.
Offensive subjects: There are certain subjects that are touchy, like under some circumstances his wife or Isengrim, also fox hunting disgusts him a lot. However, I don't care, bring up whatever subject you want. It's not as if he's not an offensive bastard on purpose a lot of the time.
Warnings: He's a manipulative bastard, he might use your character. Even if he likes them.

IC permissions
General physical violence: Oh yeah. He likely deserves it at any given time.
Injuring this character: Sure, for anything big I'd like to plot things out for even more fun.
Torturing this character: Definitely, but see above. Plotting out to make this even better.
Killing this character: Not right now, but he heals fast, so I'd be fine with getting him very close to death. Let's just plot it out.
Mental/emotional torment: Go ahead, go ahead.
Physical intimacy: Sure thing! He loves being petted, makes him purr. Literally does.
Romance: Also good, he'll likely start the flirting.
Using magic on this character: Definitely, for anything more drastic just run it by me.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: If your character is up to it, sure. It's very chaotic inside his head.
Using mind control on this character: If your character could do it, just run it by me first.

Notes: Reynard has been around for a thousand of years, at first having spent time both as part of the Seelie and Unseelie court and many years causing all sorts of trouble in the human world. He is the creature those fables and stories about a cunning fox are based on. Your character is welcome to have heard of him, whether they thought he was real or not, and if you want they can even have met before, just hit me up if you want to plot it out. He's been around.

Character information
Name: Reynard (also known as Reineke, Reynardine, Reinhardt,…)
Age: By human years he’s around a thousand years old. He looks to be in his twenties. And like a fox in its prime otherwise.
Date of Birth: 1st of August, but he has no idea and couldn’t care less.
Canon: Original, however quite influenced by fables and specifically Goethe’s Reineke Fuchs
Species: Fae
Role: Outcast, just recently came to London and joined up with the Hillingdon Clan.
Rank: Level 1

Background: The fox has always been characterized as being especially cunning in tales all over the world. In Europe stories about one fox in particular were so wide-spread that the French word for fox changed from the now archaic “goupil” to “renard”, which was the fox’s name in those stories. These stories are based on someone who still exists now, a fae who usually goes by the name of Reynard, although there are other versions of his name in use as well. Frequently he also receives lovely nicknames such as ‘that bastard’.
Of course none of the fae can lie and almost all of them become so good at not lying that it puts them even further from the truth than even the best lie could. Reynard has practiced this art since he can remember, which probably attributed to the varied accounts of his life and the different roles he can play in stories, covering the whole spectrum from villain to anti-villain to anti-hero and even hero.

In reality Reynard started out in the Seelie court. He never did care much for court life, although he understood charming the monarchs well enough, which was probably one of the main reasons he got away with his antics for as long as he did. He always spent a lot of time in the human world, fascinated by their nature and at once mocking and adoring it. However, he didn't entirely neglect the Other Realm, greatly abusing the fact that he’d very quickly acquired traits that the Seelie court despised and yet managing to mostly keep that under wraps and charm his way out of accusation. It was during this time that he not only got married to Ermelyn, whom he shared just enough with that she knew she could never trust him, but who loved him nonetheless. He also acquired a bitter rival and later determined accuser and eventual enemy in Isengrim. Physically Reynard was no match for him, but he wasn’t a very fair fighter and he also took the fight to even more uncouth levels when he seduced Isengrim’s wife. Twice.

This and other such antics made his position among the Seelie more and more precarious, so eventually he showed more of his true nature and went over to the Unseelie court. This was the point at which he split with his wife, thinking it safer for her to remain with the Seelie court and – more importantly – away from him. He had bought his way in easily enough with some valuable information and his charm and here he fit in better in many ways. However, Reynard’s very nature ultimately just didn’t agree with leaving well enough alone and so it was only a question of time before his games continued among the Unseelie court as well.

Neither of the courts can quite agree on which of them cast him out for good first, because for a while he tried changing sides with almost baffling frequency. Finally he was however banished to the human world for good, which he minded less than others might have, despite the loss of power. His fondness for humanity and even other creatures had never really subsided, he considered it a fun new challenge, a new game. Usually he travels, but every now and then he finds somewhere to settle for a time and wherever that is tends to either already be an interesting place or somehow just so happens to become a lot more interesting upon his arrival.

He has only recently arrived in London and is still deciding just what to do about it all. Since it seemed a good way to get an idea of the various politics without running into anyone who knows him that he might not want to run into, Reynard has taken up residency with the Hillingdon Clan. For how long or to what end he doesn’t even know himself.

Personality: Reynard’s personality is hard to gauge, since he’s an actor who primarily uses his personality to bring about the reactions he wants from people. He is deeply convincing in his act, to the point where the lines between faking and feeling it blur.

Primarily he simply enjoys his games and they serve no other purpose than his own amusement, but nonetheless he has often played them to bring about results that make him appear quite nefarious or even heroic. He certainly knows how to kill two birds with one stone or how to use a bird to bring down a stone avalanche.

In the stories, Reynard usually stands in for the common man who uses nothing but his cunning to outwit the authorities and ends up besting them. This is very true for the actual person too and while this can sometimes come across as if he’s selflessly risking himself, the primary motivation will still almost always unfailingly be his own amusement.

That isn’t to say that Reynard doesn’t have some honest sentiment. Although estranged these days, he is quite protective of his wife and more than once put his needs and desires on the backburner to ensure her safety. Likewise others can rise in his esteem and become dear to him. But even if he confesses such attachment, even if he means it, he really shouldn’t ever be trusted entirely.

In spite of that and as much as Reynard likes to provoke, there are reasons that he has gotten away with doing all he does for so long. He is charming and witty, he is especially good at complimenting people in ways they like to hear. He can change his manner of speech and his entire demeanour quite a lot to adjust to whoever he’s talking to and frequently does, sometimes even unintentionally.

To state that he’s flirtatious might perhaps even be underselling it. What he goes for is provoking strong reaction and one way or another, flirting in the right way can usually bring that about. He also most definitely doesn't have to fake his desire once he gets going, because that is something he’ll always gladly lose himself to.

Because of his old enemy Isengrim, he has a particular relationship with anything wolf-like, for instance werewolves. It would be easy to say that he doesn't like them, but in truth it might be more accurate to say that he loves playing with them and let’s just say that in their case he never uses safe words.

He has a sweet tooth, frequently carrying chocolate or other sweets with him, which he usually readily offers to others. However, just as most everything that inevitably ends up in his pockets, it tends to be stolen goods. He’s exceedingly generous with other people’s belongings and although he steals at every opportunity, he’s not materialistic in the least, usually sticking to simplistic clothes and quickly spending or just forgetting about even large sums of money he acquires.

When someone becomes important to him, he tends to be quite protective, looking out for them even at risk to himself. But then, he kind of enjoys taking risks, so how much of a sign of goodness that really is can be debated.

Powers & Possessions: Apart from what any fae can do, he can shapeshift into a fox. Or perhaps his actual form is a fox and he shapeshifts into a man, it’s hard to say.

Where possessions are concerned, he tends to carry around a few items on his person. Most of them are nothing special, he just picks up stuff every now and then – often borrowing from people without permission or intention of giving back. However, he almost always has at least one knife with a bronze blade on his person, often two. He usually keeps them in leather sheaths on his thighs, unless when he's somewhere carrying open weaponry would be very out of place, then he hides them away in his jacket or elsewhere.

Reynard is eloquent, very adept at reading people and consequently manipulating them. He is also a very skilled thief – with everything that entails, from picking locks to climbing, hiding, running, etc. – and pick-pocket and although physical fights are usually a last resort for him, he has fast reflexes and dirty fighting can give him the upper hand even against superior fighters, at least temporarily.
